The criminal is seductive,
we all want to break the rules sometimes.
They can seem so unfair.
When we feel destructive,
the anti-hero is there.
The villain can protest what seems right and good.
Can appeal to our angel and those who feel misunderstood.
Society can expose us to all kinds of red tape.
Bureaucracy can be so frustrating to those who most need help.
Sometimes crimes can seem to be victimless,
and we cheer for the criminal who is not a hypocrite.
Wanting draconian punishments for those without the means to live.
Who feels there is no way out but to embrace the criminal?
Then there are villains who kill and maim.
We should condemn them,
but many of us like to see them get away.
Some claim that they are expressing our frustration with the ordinary day to day,
with the injustice we must swallow.
The obstacles that get in our way.
To rebel against the system even if it glorifies violence.
To see the ancient battle of good and evil enacted and to sometimes be surprised when evil triumphs.
The psychology of the criminal is complex.
From murder to imposters and con-artists.
To drugs and selling sex.
To fraud and petty theft.
As both sides of the issue emerge,
sometimes we offer help.
Sometimes a societal plunge.
We can sympathize with desperate people on the verge of criminality.
Their defiance is an integral part of our reality because being human is to have some moral fragility.
